Study: Brabant is the heart of the High Tech Systems & Materials sector
More than 50% of Dutch patents originate from Brabant. About 130,000 people work at more than 15,500 large and small high-tech companies. These companies are global leaders in their subsectors. But how can this great HTSM sector of Brabant be explained?
This is mainly due to the ecosystem, which is built around a large number of high-quality disciplines: various campuses and knowledge institutes, talent, the innovative collaborative projects, experiment centers and field labs.
This is apparent from the recently published study ‘High Tech Systems & Materials Sector’ that the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) carried out. The more than 300-page research report provides a good and broad picture of this sector and the role of companies, campuses, knowledge institutions and the government in Brabant.

“The aim of this study is to provide a detailed overview of the High Tech Systems & Materials sector in Brabant, including the strengths and opportunities for the region,” says senior project manager Frits Hoeve of BOM. “In 2021, the world is facing a number of major challenges. Changes are necessary to feed the growing world population everywhere and to guarantee a dignified existence on the one hand, and to keep the world, this earth, habitable on the other. The development of new technologies and systems that are sustainable, circular, safe and precise will also have to contribute to this. And that’s where the High Tech Systems & Materials sector in Brabant comes in: it is active and highly developed in really all relevant technology areas that are needed to generate solutions for societal challenges.”
