The relationship between Japan and the Netherlands already lasts more than 400 years and is still thriving. With over 70 Japanese companies located in the Brabant region and the ties between the universities of Eindhoven and Tsukuba, Japan is never far away. On April 9, 2018, the province of Brabant and the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo organized the first Brabant Innovation Day in Tokyo – Japan. Around 100 Japanese companies joined this event and listened attentively to the presentations in which the latest technology developments and research topics in Brabant came forward. This day was set up in collaboration with the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), High Tech campus Eindhoven and the knowledge institutes Holst Centre, Solliance, PITC and AMSystems.
This delegation from Brabant travelled to Japan with a purpose, namely to further intensify the relationship between Japan and the Netherlands. The Japanese companies had the opportunity to learn more about the technology we have to offer in Brabant, as well as the research collaborations that are possible in our region.
We were honored to welcome a diverse variety of attendants, both from businesses and institutes. We look forward to further connect Japan and the Netherlands and support those that are looking to invest in our country and region.

He shared a story about the relationship between the Netherlands and Japan, and the fact that both stand by their leadership in technology and innovation. “It brings us together”, says Mr. Bert Pauli. The opening of Mr. Bert Pauli was followed by a great pitch on the Brabant ecosystem, presented by Mr. Jan-Hein Chrisstoffels, Innovation Attaché at the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo.
In Brabant, we can find all the elements that make the Dutch innovation ecosystem successful. These elements are innovation power in leading businesses, excellent research from our knowledge institutes and close collaboration between these institutes, companies and the government.

A great presentation with good examples of the excellent quality that the Brabant region has to offer to Japan.
With regards to the collaboration between companies and knowledge institutes, the High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the greatest example. Mr. Cees Admiraal, Business Development Director at the High Tech Campus, shared the open innovation collaboration model of the campus and the long standing relationship they have with Japanese companies. Next to that, the knowledge institutes Holst Centre, Solliance, AMSystems and PITC shared what they are capable of with regards to innovation and technology.
The Brabant Innovation Day concluded with a highly appreciated keynote from Mr. Eiji Fujii, Executive Officer of Panasonic Corporation and Vice President CTO of Automotive & Industrial Systems Company. Mr. Fujii shared his view on developments with regards to autonomous driving and Internet of Things, and how these developments will further impact our society.
